Allen edges Lander 75-73 in final non-conference test

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Lander women's basketball team saw its final non-conference contest of the season slip away in the closing seconds Thursday night, as Allen University converted a layup with three seconds remaining to edge the Bearcats 75-73 in Columbia.

Lander (2-9) and Allen (6-4) battled through a back-and-forth opening quarter that featured multiple lead changes, with the Bearcats holding a slim 19-15 advantage midway through the period. Allen responded with a strong second-quarter push and carried its momentum into the third, building its largest lead of the night at 55-41 with 8:44 left in the third quarter.

The Bearcats answered behind aggressive defense and second-chance opportunities, cutting into the deficit and setting up a tightly contested fourth quarter. Lander forced key turnovers down the stretch and briefly took a 73-72 lead with 12 seconds remaining, but Allen answered at the rim in the final moments to regain the advantage and secure the win.

Despite the loss, Lander finished the night shooting 45% from the field and out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 33-30, including 14 offensive boards that led to 15 second-chance points. The Bearcats also capitalized at the free-throw line, going 13-of-17, while forcing 26 Allen turnovers and converting them into 22 points.

Quadaija Langley paced Lander with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, adding seven rebounds and three 3-pointers. Trinity Thomas followed with 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Alindria Dudley contributed nine points and four steals. Lauren Crosland and Lauryn Hunt provided a spark off the bench with eight points apiece as Lander totaled 28 bench points.

With non-conference play now concluded, Lander turns its attention to conference play following the holiday break, closing the calendar year with a competitive road showing in its final non-league test.

The Bearcats return to Horne Arena to open the new year with a conference matchup against the University of South Carolina Aiken on Saturday, Jan. 3, with tipoff set for 1:30 p.m.
