COCHRAN, Ga. – Riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak and a comeback for the ages on Wednesday night, the Lander women's soccer team extended its streak to four wins in a row on Saturday. They bested Middle Georgia State by a 5-0 final score on the road at Nesmith Field.
The win is the 10th this season for the Bearcats – they are now 10-2-2, 7-1-1 PBC – and it was head coach
Chris Ayer's 96th career Peach Belt Conference win, which pulls him into a tie for second place all-time with UNCP's Lars Anderson and UNG's Chris Adams.
It's the second time this season the Bearcats have put a five-spot on the board in addition to a road win over Albany State last month.
Claire Regnault,
Rylee King and
Reagan Hardy all scored first-half goals as Lander held a three-goal advantage at the break.
Regnault's came in the sixth minute, Hardy's in the 16th and King's in the 23rd.
The Blue and Gold outshot the Knights by a 23-1 margin, with 17 shots coming on target.
Sophia Trio scored for the second time in three games to open the second half, and
Abby Mercadante put the finishing touches on the match with her first career goal in the 80th minute.
Gabby Redman tallied the assist on the play.
The Bearcats, who maintained the No. 2 seed in the PBC with the win, will have a week to prepare for Senior Day and the regular-season finale versus Georgia College next Saturday, Nov. 1. Kick-off, which is scheduled for 1 p.m., will be preceded by a pregame ceremony.
