Two First-Half Goals Lift Lander Over Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Goals from Kylie Wilson and Langley Stewart in the first 20 minutes were all the Lander women's soccer team needed as the Bearcats took down Columbus State, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Walden Soccer Complex.

The win marked Lander's first over Columbus State since 2019 and its first victory in Columbus since 2012.

Lander struck early, opening the scoring within the first ten minutes. Wilson headed a corner that was initially saved by the Columbus State keeper, but the rebound deflected off a Cougar defender and into the net to put Lander ahead 1-0. Just a few minutes later, Stewart capitalized on another corner, heading the ball into the right side of the net to double the lead for the Blue and Gold.

The hosts pulled one back in the 38th minute to make it 2-1 heading into halftime. Early in the second half, the Cougars had a chance to equalize, but Isabella LaMadrid came up with a clutch save — one of three in her first start of the season.

The Bearcat defense limited Columbus State to just one shot on target the rest of the way to secure the win. Lander has allowed more than one goal in a match only twice all season.

Lander returns home next Saturday to continue Peach Belt Conference play against USC Beaufort. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
