GREENWOOD – Sophia Trio scored her first collegiate goal in the second half, and the Lander women's soccer defense turned in another stellar performance as the Bearcats beat the visiting Sand Sharks of USC Beaufort by a 1-0 final score on Saturday afternoon at
Van Taylor Stadium.
Trio came close several times throughout the season's first 11 games before today, but she nailed a right-footed shot in the box after stellar passes from
Maddie Leber,
Evelyn Wright and
Paige Bailey set her up perfectly in the 50th minute.
Lander is now 8-2-2, 5-1-1 PBC as USCB fell to 9-3-2, 3-3-2 PBC.
Kylie Wilson nearly had the first goal of the game in the 30th minute but her would-be-goal on a corner kick was nullified by a called handball.
In her return to the starting lineup,
Leah Hayes Coen provided a steady hand with seven saves and her fourth solo clean sheet this season.
USCB held a narrow 13-10 edge in shots while both teams had a pair of corner kicks in an evenly matched contest.
The Bearcats will next host the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes this Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. under the lights at
Van Taylor Stadium.
