Six-Run First Inning Too Much for Lander to Overcome on Opening Day

GREENWOOD - The Lander Baseball team fell behind 6-0 to the Erskine Flying Fleet on Friday afternoon before the Bearcats even took an at-bat. However, Lander battled back to make it a one-run game but another late flurry of runs from the Fleet allowed the visitors to come away with a 10-6 win at Dolny Stadium.

Erskine improved to 1-0 with the win while Lander dropped to 0-1.

Jagger Jefferis (Barnesville, Ohio) took the mound and got the first two outs of the first fairly easily but after an RBI single to give Erskine the 1-0 lead, a fielding error on Jefferis kept the inning going and led to the Fleet scoring six runs in the inning, despite only one of them being earned.

The Lander offense was kept quiet until the third inning when Connor Droze (Roebuck, S.C.) picked up right where he left off last season with a two-run shot just to the right of the batter's eye to get the Blue and Gold on the scoreboard at 6-2.

The Bearcats cut it down to a one-run deficit in the fifth with some small ball from an RBI fielders choice by Evan Wickeri (Middleburg, Fla.) and an RBI groundout by Will McClellan (Anderson, S.C.) to make it 6-4. Then, Caden Crews (Jansen Beach, Fla.) drew a bases-loaded walk via a pitch clock violation to make it 6-5 Erskine after five innings.

After the shaky start, the Bearcat pitching settled down, as a combo effort from Jefferis and Evan Demurias (Miami, Fla.) kept Erskine off the scoreboard for four innings

However, that changed in the sixth inning, as Erskine answered Lander's three-run inning with one of their own to re-establish the four-run Fleet lead, they then added another run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-5.

Lander got a run in the bottom of the seventh off a sacrifice fly but that was as close as Lander got.

The two teams continue the opening weekend series with a doubleheader at Erskine's Grier Field tomorrow starting at 10:30 AM.
