GREENWOOD – Fresh on the heels of their season-opening win over North Greenville on Thursday night, the Lander women's soccer team played stingy defense en route to a 1-0 win Saturday night over visiting Belmont Abbey (0-1).
Lander (2-0) and the Crusaders played to a scoreless draw over the first 45 minutes as each team registered just a single shot on net.
Claire Regnault nearly scored the game's first goal in the 52nd minute but was denied by the BAC keeper.
10 minutes later, senior
Emma Sexton finally broke the stalemate with her first goal of the year for the only score of the night. From there the Bearcat defense continued to show their mettle and blanked an opponent for the second game in a row – giving
Leah Hayes Coen two straight clean sheets.
Lander will enjoy a few days' respite before playing host to Wingate at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
