GREENWOOD – In the third game of the 2024 campaign, the Lander women's soccer team played to a draw against Wingate at
Van Taylor Stadium in a hearty Wednesday night battle.
Keeper
Leah Hayes Coen made a few incredible saves throughout the match – four in all – to keep the Bulldogs (1-0-2) off the board for her third consecutive clean sheet.
Collectively, Lander (2-0-1) had another sterling defensive effort and maintained control for much of the game. That allowed the offense to pepper the opposing goalie with five shots on net and 12 overall to go along with 10 corner-kick opportunities.
All of the Bearcats' scoring chances came in the second half, the first of which came off the foot of this week's Peach Belt Defender of the Week,
Lucy Bova.
Maren White followed with her opportunity in the 60th minute, and
Angele Hills, six minutes after that.
Emma Sexton (78th minute) and
Romie Llewellyn (82nd) weren't able to get one past the Wingate keeper late and the game ended scoreless.
The Bearcats play their fourth straight home game to start the season this Saturday versus Lee at 5 p.m.
