GREENWOOD – Seeking their third win in four games on Saturday evening at
Van Taylor Stadium, the Lander women's soccer team accomplished just that in a 2-0 win over the visiting Lady Flames of Lee University (Tenn.).
Lander (3-0-1) played more of its signature defense and controlled the action from the start.
Mia Piazza scored her first goal of the season and the first goal of the game after
Angele Hills headed a ball her way; Piazza rifled one home from about 30 yards out on the right side of the pitch – going top-left shelf – to set the tone in the sixth minute.
After
Maren White was stopped by the Flames' (0-2-2) goalkeeper,
Katherine Blain buried the rebound into the back of the net for her first career goal and a two-goal Bearcat advantage 22 minutes into the night.
That score would hold for the remainder of the game. Lander, it should be noted, registered five shots on goal in each half and kept Lee against the wall for the vast majority of the game.
Leah Hayes Coen had her fourth consecutive clean sheet in net with a pair of saves.
Lander hits the road for the first time this season in a Wednesday (Sept. 18) matchup with Converse in Spartanburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
