GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team earned a resounding 5-0 victory on Thursday night at
Van Taylor Stadium in the 2024 season-opener over North Greenville.
Playing dominant defense from the start, the Bearcats (1-0) held the newly named Trailblazers (0-1) to only two shots on net the entire game. For their part, Lander fired 13 shots on net, led by
Angele Hills' three shots on goal and pair of scores – both in the first half.
Korina Byland,
Darcy Ahern and
Lucy Bova brought the Bearcat tally to 5.
Hills got the game going just 2:12 into the night with her first career goal to open the scoring in 2024. She followed that up with another in the 18th minute to stake Lander to a 2-0 lead. Byland snuck one home in the 35th minute for a three-goal advantage heading into the second half.
In that closing half, Ahern netted her first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute, and Bova, her second just five minutes later.
Keeper
Leah Hayes Coen picked up from where she left off in her impressive 2023 campaign with a clean sheet.
Lander has a quick turnaround as they host Belmont Abbey on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
