GREENWOOD – Thanks to stifling defense and a pair of impressive goals on Wednesday night at
Van Taylor Stadium, the Lander women's soccer team earned a 2-0 win in non-conference action against South Atlantic Conference-member Anderson.
Lander (5-0-2, 0-0-1 Peach Belt Conference) has now held all but one of its opponents scoreless through seven games. In this game, the defense held Anderson (4-2-0, 1-1-0 SAC) to a single shot in each half while the Bearcats' offensive attack consisted of 15 shots and seven on goal.
One of those shots on goal came from 30 yards out on the left side with only a few minutes remaining in the first half as
Lucy Bova connected into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Though the Bearcats had nine shots in the second half – including a
Maren White free kick off the crossbar in the 62nd minute – they weren't able to extend the lead until late. With 1:17 to play,
Angele Hills used her signature speed to break free of the Anderson defense on the right side and scored with her left foot in close for the exclamation point.
Lander hosts PBC foe and No. 4 ranked Columbus State on Saturday afternoon at
Van Taylor Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00.
