GREENWOOD — Flagler held on to defeat Lander 8-6 Saturday afternoon in a winner's bracket game of the PBC Championship.
The Saints jumped out to the early lead, scoring six runs in the first two innings. The Bearcats got on the board in the third on an RBI single by Taichi Nakao. Flagler answered with a run of its own in the fourth to make it a six-run game. Connor Droze led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run. Chris Manriquez followed with a double to left-center and moved to third on a single by Gary Garrett. Manriquez scored on a sacrifice fly by Ross McCurrley to cut the deficit to four runs. The Bearcats got another run back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Manriquez to make it 7-4. Trailing 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth, the Bearcats scratched two runs across but could not get any closer.
Droze was 2-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and a run driven in, while Wilder was 2-4 with two runs scored to lead the Bearcats. Ethan Califf (3-3) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in eight innings.
