ROME, Ga. - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team wrapped the road portion of their 2024 season on Saturday afternoon by dispatching the Shorter Hawks in dominating fashion, 19-4, at Ben Brady Field.
With the win, Lander improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in Gulf South play. The win also secured a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament for the third straight year. Shorter dropped to 2-9 overall and is 0-3 in league play.
Alyssa Suchan led the way with eight points, scoring a season-high five goals and notching three assists. Her attacking counterpart, Emmy Peterson, added seven points of her own netting four goals and matching Suchan's assist total. Freshman Sophie Warren scored two goals and has now scored in back-to-back games.
Lander jumped out to a 3-0 lead off goals from Peterson, Warren, and Ella Martin before Shorter scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to one.Â
The Bearcats then scored four straight to make it 7-2 before the Hawks got one back but from there Lander took over the game and from
Kayla Smith's goal with 13 seconds left in the first quarter until
Mickey Burnett scored with 12:17 left in the third, Lander outscored Shorter, 7-0 before the Hawks got their final goal of the game with 6:46 left in the third quarter to make it 14-4.
With the running clock in effect, Lander ended the game on a 5-0 run to put the game really on ice.
Lander wraps up the season next week as they host Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, April 17th for a 6:00 PM first draw before concluding the campaign on Saturday, April 20th against Alabama-Huntsville.
