Milledgeville, Ga. — In a matchup of the top two teams in the Peach Belt, #24 Lander scored three runs in the eighth inning and held on for a 3-1 win over #28 Georgia College & State in the series opener. Gary Garrett also broke the school's career stolen base record when he picked up his 61st in the fifth inning of the win.
The Bobcats broke the scoreless tie with an unearned run in the third. The Bearcats could not score a run through the first seven innings. Ross McCurley led off the top of the eighth with a single to left field and a steal second. Taichi Nakao's sacrifice bunt moved McCurley to third, and a sacrifice fly by Ethan Wilder tied the game at one. Connor Droze followed with a single to right and advanced to third base on a single by Chris Manriquez. Chandler Moeller then drove in Droze with a single. Oliver Zohn loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch, and Gart Garrett walked to score Manriquez to make it 3-1. The Bobcats didn't go away without a fight, loading the bases with one out in the ninth, but Tyler Overholt induced a double play to end the game and give Lander the win and record his seventh save of the year.
Moeller was 1-3 with an RBI, and Wilder was 1-4 with a run driven in to lead Lander at the plate. Bennett Nance (6-4)dominated the Georgia College lineup, allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out seven hitters in seven innings.
