Peterson and Burnett Net Four Goals as Lander Tops Frostburg State, 18-11

GREENWOOD - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team outscored the Frostburg State Bobcats, 11-2 in the first and third quarters as the Bearcats took down the defending Mountain East Conference champions, 18-11, on Thursday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Mickey Burnett and Emmy Peterson each scored four goals for the Blue and Gold, Peterson added four assists to lead all players with eight points. Kasey Bronco and Amelia McCauley netted two goals, and six other Bearcats scored a goal.

Defensively, Izzy Olson led the way with three caused turnovers while four Bearcats forced two Bobcat turnovers, including Autumn Huskey who also led all players with seven draw controls.

Despite a strong 7-1 draw control advantage to Frostburg State in the first 15 minutes, Lander outscored the Bobcats, 6-1 in the first quarter.

Bronco got the scoring started under a minute into the game, but the Bobcats responded just under two minutes later to tie the game at one.

From there, Lander scored the last five goals of the quarter, with Burnett netting two and Peterson, Brooke Kelly, and Alyssa Suchan netting one.

In the second quarter, the Bobcats cut the lead down to three but goals from Burnett, Peterson, and Kayla Smith got it back up to five at 10-5 before two Frostburg goals in the last 70 seconds made it 10-7 going into halftime.

However, in the third quarter, the Bearcats created much-needed seperation, outscoring the Bobcats 5-1. McCauley opened the scoring in the quarter before the Bobcats got their only goal less than a minute later.

From there, Olson, Peterson, McCauley, Bronco, as well as Ella Benson gave Lander an 18-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Frostburg didn't get another goal for over a full quarter of game time as Kara Krusbe made five saves in the third quarter to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

The Bobcats scored three goals in the quarter, but goals from Kylie Fragala and Peterson kept them at arm's length.

Lander continues their homestand next Tuesday, March 26th as they host the Mount Olive Trojans for a 3:00 PM first draw.
