Columbus, Ga. - Lander swept a Peach Belt doubleheader from Columbus State Saturday. The Bearcats won game one 5-2 and game two 2-1. The wins clinch the series for the Bearcats, their first series win over the Cougars since 2021. The start time for the series finale has been moved up. The game will now start at 11:00 am instead of 1:00 pm.
GAME ONE
Neither team could score a run in the first four innings. Oliver Zone led off the fifth with a single up the middle and later scored when Gary Garrett reached base on a Cougar error. The Bearcats opened the game with three runs in the sixth inning to make it 4-0 and went on to win 5-2.
Will McClellan led the Lander offense, going 2-4 with a run scored, and Garrett was 1-4 with two RBIs. Bennett Nance (3-4) picked up the win, allowing two runs on four hits in eight innings. Tyler Overholt (4) picked up the save with a scoreless inning of relief work.
GAME TWO
In the third inning, Matthew Slaton led off with a walk and later scored on a groundout by Taichi Nakao to give Lander the lead. A solo home run by Ethan Wilder in the sixth inning made it 2-0. Columbus State scored a run in the seventh, but that would be the only run they got.
Chandler Moeller was 2-4 for the Bearcats, Wilder had the home run and RBI, and Nakao was 1-4 with a run driven in. Ethan Califf (1-2) picked up his first career win, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three in seven and one-thirds innings. Kurt Rogers (1) recorded the save, striking out one in one and two-thirds innings of no-hit work.
