Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lander Falls to Georgia Southwestern, 81-72

AMERICUS, Ga. - Tanyia Gordon (Plant City, Fla.) scored 25 points and WyKira Johnson-Kelly (Franklinville, N.J.) added 21 of her own, including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc, but it wasn't enough as once again a stark free throw discrepancy and a 42-22 rebound advantage proved to be the difference as the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes handed Lander their third consecutive loss, 81-72, on Saturday evening at the Storm Dome.

Lander falls to 14-6 and 7-3 in PBC play while Georgia Southwestern sits at 16-2 and 9-1 in PBC play, a full two games ahead of Lander in the PBC standings.

Gordon and Johnson-Kelly were the top two scorers on the floor while Quadaija Langley (Travelers Rest, S.C.) added 14 points as well.

However, Georgia Southwestern had all five of their starters reach double digits.

The first quarter was a nip-and-tug affair as neither team held over a one-possession lead. Lander grabbed a three-point lead off a Langley trey to make it 5-2 but the Hurricanes opened up a three point lead of their own at 19-16 at the end of the first quarter and they would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

The Hurricanes got their lead up to seven but Lander slowly started to chip away aided by Tanyia Gordon's 12 points in the second quarter as the Bearcats got the deficit down to one possession on numerous occasions but Georgia Southwestern had a response every time to keep Lander trailing by two at 39-37 at the half.

Lander was outscored 27-13 in the third quarter and the Hurricanes stretched their lead to as many as 18 but a Gordon basket at the horn made it a 16-point hill to climb in the last quarter at 66-50.

Georgia Southwestern increased their lead to 21 but Lander did not go away quietly as they forced four Hurricane turnovers as part of a 10-0 run that forced a timeout from the hosts with the score 73-62.

Langley hit a three-pointer and the lead was now eight but with time ticking down, Lander was forced to play the fouling game and the Hurricanes responded by knocking down 10 of 12 from the line to keep the Bearcats from getting any closer.

Lander returns home for a duo of games for Homecoming week next week as they welcome the Sand Sharks of USC Beaufort to Horne Arena for the first time ever on Wednesday at 5:30 PM before a homecoming date with the Clayton State Lakers on Saturday at 1:30 PM.
