Third Quarter Dooms Lander Against #24 Saints

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team went into the halftime break trailing by one against the 24th ranked Limestone Saints but a 6-1 third quarter by the home side saw Limestone build a lead that the Bearcats could not overcome as the Saints came away with a 16-10 win on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field.

Lander drops to 2-3 while Limestone improves to 5-0 on the season.

Emmy Peterson led the way with three goals, Mickey Burnett added two of her own, and Kasey Bronco, Alyssa Suchan, Izzy Olson, Ella Benson, and Amelia McCauley each added a goal a piece.

Despite a 11-5 shot advantage in favor of Limestone, Lander only found themselves down 4-3 after the first quarter.

Benson and Bronco scored the first two goals of the game to give the Bearcats an early 2-0 lead but Limestone scored four of the next five goals to take a 4-3 lead with over six minutes to go in the first quarter.

After a flurry of offense, the defenses settled in after that as a goal was not scored for almost a full quarter of game time when Peterson scored with 6:29 left in the second to tie the game at four. However, the Saints scored the next two to flip the scoreline back in their favor.

Olson scored right before the half to give Lander some momentum going into the locker room only down 6-5.

The third quarter was all Saints as they outshot Lander 14-5, putting 13 of them on goal, and won the draw control battle 6-1, matching the scoreline of the quarter to give them a 12-6 lead after the third.

Lander got the deficit down to five at 14-9 off the goal from Burnett but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

The Bearcats open Gulf South play next Saturday as they host the Montevallo Falcons at 12:00 PM at Van Taylor Stadium.
