Lander Overcomes Slow Offensive Start to Down GCSU, 50-43

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Despite shooting under 30% for the game and only having 23 points have three quarters of play, the Lander Women's Basketball team exploded for 27 points in the fourth quarter to come away with a 50-43 victory over the Georgia College and State University Bobcats on Saturday afternoon on homecoming at the Centennial Center.

Lander improves to 16-8 on the year and 9-5 in PBC while the Bobcats fall to 11-13 and 5-9 in PBC play.

WyKira Johnson-Kelly (Franklinville, N.J.) led all players with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The first half saw points tough to come by as Lander only made four shots from the field total in the first 20 minutes of play. However, the Bearcat defense held Georgia College to only 18 points in the first half to help the Blue and Gold only trail 18-13 at the intermission.

Lander's defense took a step up in the third quarter, holding the Bobcats to only one shot made from the field and Lander was able to cut into the deficit to only trail by one going into the last quarter of action.

The Bobcats stretched their lead to as much as five but Lander got it back down to one possession but from their the teams would trade buckets until a pair of free throws from Cory Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio) gave Lander their first lead since it was 7-6 in the first quarter at 40-39. Tucker then added a layup to make it a three-point Lander lead. Georgia College made a couple of baskets but three pairs of free throws off the hand of Johnson-Kelly capped of a 14-4 run to end the game and see Lander emerge with their fifth road win of the season.

The Bearcats return to action next Wednesday as they welcome the Augusta Jaguars to Horne Arena for a 5:30 PM tip.
