Bronco’s Golden Goal Gives Lander First Win of Season over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team saw an 11-8 lead disappear in the fourth quarter but were not phased as Kasey Bronco (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) laced a shot into the cage 34 seconds into overtime to give the Bearcats a 13-12 overtime win over the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday evening at Setzler Field.

The game was Lander's first overtime game since March 20th, 2022 against Lee and the Bearcats' first overtime win since the 15-14 comeback win over Belmont Abbey on February 9th, 2022.

Emmy Peterson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) led all goal scorers with five goals, she also added one assist. Alyssa Suchan (Leduc, Alberta, Canada), Mickey Burnett (Baltimore, Md.), and Ella Benson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) each scored two goals of their own. Bronco and Izzy Olson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) each cracked the scoresheet once.

Each team was scoreless for the first seven minutes of action until Newberry broke the ice with 7:53 left in the quarter. Lander, however, responded just over three minutes later on Peterson's first of the game.

After Newberry took a 2-1 a short time later, Peterson got her lone assist to Suchan to tie the game at two. Less than a minute later, Suchan assisted Olson and then added another goal of her own with 30 seconds to play to give Lander a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.

The game started to open up in the second quarter as Peterson scored three goals in eight minutes to give Lander a 7-4 lead. Ella Benson then added her first of the game off the assist from Burnett to make it 8-4, Bearcats.

Newberry struck with 35 seconds left in the half and threatened again but Kara Krusbe (Jupiter, Fla.) made her sixth save of the half to keep the three-goal lead. However, that ended up being Krusbe's last save as she was shown a red card after the halftime horn and would have to sit out the rest of the game.

Taryn Samons (Fort Mill, S.C.) was up to the task in relief as she made five saves on seven shots in the third quarter alone while Peterson and Benson each added goals to give Lander a 10-7 lead heading into the final regulation frame.

However, Lander was outscored 5-2 in the final frame, both goals coming from Burnett, and the game was bound for an extra frame.

Olson got the draw control off the restart and found Benson who passed it to a cutting Bronco to slot the game-winning goal home less than a minute into the extra frame to give Lander the win.

The Bearcats open their home slate on Saturday as they welcome the Tusculum Pioneers to Van Taylor Stadium. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM first draw.
