#15 Bearcats Send Six to Second Day of Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 15th-ranked Lander Wrestling team saw six wrestlers advance through day one of the Midwest Classic on Saturday.

Every Lander wrestler picked up at least one win and the Bearcats currently sit in 16th place with 35 team points.

Christian Davis (Arizona City, Ariz.) (133) and David Hunsberger (Duncan, S.C.) (165) each picked up two wins to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow, needing one more win to secure a spot on the podium. Hunsberger is looking to become the first-ever two-time Midwest Champion in program history.

Davis picked up a pin over Gavin Mastrangelo of Emmanuel in 1:14 before dispatching Jevin Foust of Newman with a 9-3 decision. The freshman is set to face the fourth-ranked wrestler at 133 in Peter Rolle of Central Oklahoma in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning.

Hunsburger picked up an 18-2 tech fall in the first round before grinding out a 5-3 decision to send him into the quarterfinals against Jace Fisher of Newman.

Isham Peace (Okatie, S.C.) (141), RJ Noble (Plant City, Fla.) (149), Noah Ruolo (157), and Nathan Buckovich (174) all remain in contention for third place through the consolation bracket.

Peace was only one of two Bearcats not to receive a bye in the first round. He responded in a big way, picking up two bonus point wins: one pin and a tech fall, which sent him into the third round. However, the redshirt junior fell to a 7-4 decision but stayed alive with a 8-6 decision over regional foe, Braden Tatum of Newberry, to advance him to day 2. Peace will face Ryan Wehner of Upper Iowa in his first matchup tomorrow.

Noble came just short of a major decision in his first matchup before falling in the third round via pin to the fifth-ranked wrestler at 149. In his first consolation matchup, Noble picked up a major decision over Nelson of UNC Pembroke. He will face Emilio Arellano of Tiffin in his first match of day two.

Roulo was the other Bearcat not to receive a bye but picked up two wins via decision before dropping his third-round matchup in a close 4-2 decision. Roulo bounced back and secured his spot on day two with an 11-2 major decision. He will face Cooper Warshel of Pitt-Johnstown tomorrow morning.

Buckovich picked up a 9-2 decision in his first match of the day before dropping a 4-2 decision in the third round. He bounced back with a 9-6 decision to send him to a matchup with Jakob Hurley of Tiffin tomorrow morning.

The action gets back started on Sunday at 9:30 AM on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
