GREENWOOD – On a day honoring its 2024 senior class, the Lander women's soccer team did that and more with an exclamatory 5-0 home conference win over Albany State on Saturday afternoon.
In all, 11 Bearcats were honored in a pregame ceremony including:
Korina Byland,
Lauren DaRe,
Alarie Hodge,
Romie Llewellyn,
Mia Piazza,
Annika Seifart,
Emma Sexton,
Kaitlyn Thompson,
Maren White,
Sammi Wolf and
Kara Yandle.
DaRe got the Bearcats on the board first with the first goal of her collegiate career as she took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity in the 31st minute. Teammate
Lucy Bova scored a nifty goal going to her left 11 minutes later to stake Lander (8-2-4, 3-2-3 PBC) to a 2-0 halftime lead.
Freshman
Ellisyn Poland netted her first career goal early in the second half to push the Bearcat advantage to three goals. After a 20-plus minute scoreless spell for both sides,
Darcy Ahern scored for the second time in her freshman campaign to make it 4-0.
Closing the scoring was
Angele Hills with her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 86th minute.
For the game, Lander outshot Albany State (1-15-0, 0-8-0 PBC) 39-2, with 19 of those coming on net. The Bearcats' regular season concludes on Monday evening (Nov. 4) on the road against North Georgia in a 6:00 start.
