GREENWOOD – Hosting the No. 2 team in Division II on Wednesday night at
Van Taylor Stadium in front of a hearty crowd, the Lander women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Columbus State after surrendering a late goal.
Things started off in a flash for the Bearcats (7-2-4, 2-2-3 PBC) as some nifty footwork from
Annika Seifart presented a scoring lane for
Alarie Hodge who took Seifart's pass and made it 1-0 Lander only 2:50 into the night.
Maren White nearly made it 2-0 just as quickly but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar a few minutes later. The Cougars (14-0-1, 8-0-0 PBC) had their response in the 11th minute to even the game at 1.
Angele Hills also hit the crossbar in the 38th minute and the teams went into halftime still tied.
Both defensive units locked down over the final 45 minutes with Hills having the Bearcats' best scoring chances in the 60th minute, and with 20 seconds left that were both pushed aside by the Cougars' keeper.
CSU scored the tie-breaking goal with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Lander outshot the visitors 16-13 for the game and held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Day is this Saturday (Nov. 2) vs. Albany State. Game time is at 1 p.m.
