GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team won by a final margin of 3-2 for the second time in three games on Wednesday evening at
Van Taylor Stadium over fellow Peach Belt member USC Aiken.
Kaitlyn Thompson scored her first two goals of the season in a timely performance for the Bearcats as they improved to 7-1-3 and 2-1-2 in the PBC. The Pacers fell to 2-10-2 overall and 1-6-0 in conference play.
Also joining Thompson in the goal-scoring category was
Alarie Hodge with the game-winner.
Aiken got on the board first in the 22nd minute before Thompson evened things at 1 apiece 12 minutes later off a feed from
Emma Sexton; the score remained tied by halftime.
Sexton fired a shot on net eight minutes into the second half that was saved by the Pacer keeper but earned her second assist a short while later on Hodge's score. In rather spectacular fashion, Hodge pushed the Bearcats ahead 2-1 in the 59th minute, scoring as she fell from about 25 yards out to the right corner of the net.
Thompson added what turned out to be a crucial insurance goal in the 81st minute to make it 3-1 before Aiken answered with the final goal of the game a few minutes later.
For the game, Lander dominated with 23 shots to the Pacers' 5, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Up next for the Bearcats is a road date with Georgia Southwestern in Americus this Saturday (Oct. 26) at 5 p.m.
