Columbus, Ga. - Lander held off a late Cougar rally and held on for a 70-67 victory over Columbus State Saturday afternoon.
Trailing Columbus State 13-12 midway through the first half, Jacob Cooper hit a layup to give Lander the lead. A dunk by Dominic Stanford would increase the lead to three. After the Cougars tied the game at 16 with just under 10 minutes remaining, the Bearcats would go on an 11-0 run to take a 27-16 lead. Lander would go into the break leading 35-28.
The Bearcats would continue to lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 12 points. Columbus State would slowly chip away at the Lander lead and a three-point basket with 15 seconds remaining to make it a 68-67 game. Cooper would find Torrin Andrews on a fast break for a layup to seal the win for the Bearcats.
Cooper led Lander with 19 points and eight assists. Inady Legiste finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, and Andrews had 11 points.
