Bearcats down Jaguars, remain undefeated in PBC play

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Lander women's basketball team continued their perfect start to their conference slate as they took down the Augusta Jaguars 60-52 Wednesday afternoon at the Christenberry Field House.
Cory Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio), who hit four 3-pointers in the half, led all scorers with 16 points. WyKira Johnson-Kelly (Franklinville, N.J.) added 15 points and Tanyia Gordon (Plant City, Fla.) added 13 points to lead the way for the Bearcats. Lander improves to 14-3 on the season and 7-0 in conference play. The Jaguars fall to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in Peach Belt Conference play.
Augusta jumped out to an early lead on the strength of a couple of early buckets by the Jags' Tomiyah Alford. Monet Florence added four first-quarter points of her own and the Jaguars led the Bearcats 18-11 after the first quarter.
The Bearcats came roaring out in the second quarter. Following Santoro's third 3-pointer of the first half, Gordon hit a 15-footer with 7:37 remaining in the half to tie the game up at apiece. A minute later, Abby Carter (Geneva, Ohio) hit a jumper from the wing to give the Bearcats the lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the contest.
Johnson-Kelly took over late in the second quarter, dropping six points in the period and leading the Bearcats to a 29-23 halftime advantage.
Johnson-Kelly led a run to open up the second half that saw the Bearcats open their lead up to 11 at 40-29 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. A Nyaneit Polk 3-pointer bookended by a couple of free throws to end the quarter would bring Augusta back to within six points at the end of the period.
The Jaguars would the pressure on as the fourth quarter opened up. Yamani Paul led the effort for Augusta, going 5-for-5 from the line and adding a field goal, bringing the Jaguars to within a point at 50-49 with 3:42 to play.
The Bearcats defense then took over and allowed three points over the final stretch, including a stretch of more than two minutes where the Jaguars did not score a single point.
The Bearcats travel to Columbus State for a 1:30 tip on Saturday, January 27.
