Johnson-Kelly Nets Double Double as Bearcats improve to 3-0 in PBC Play

BLUFFTON, S.C. - After being named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week on Monday, WyKira Johnson-Kelly (Franklinville, N.J.) continued her outstanding play as she recorded the first double-double for the Lander Women's Basketball team this season as the Bearcats took down the USC Beaufort Sand Sharks, 56-41 on Wednesday evening in the first meeting between the two schools.

Lander improves to 10-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in PBC play while the Sand Sharks dropped to 4-7 overall and winless in three PBC games.

Johnson-Kelly had 22 points and 13 rebounds for her double double, leading Lander in both statistics. She also led the team in assists with four as well as blocks with three. Tanyia Gordon (Plant City, Fla.) also added 15 points of her own and led the team with four steals.

Alicia Burgos (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Abby Carter (Geneva, Ohio) got Lander out to a quick 4-0 lead with each making a layup but Beaufort tied the game at four before Johnson-Kelly hit a layup through a foul to send the game to the media timeout. This was the last field goal Lander made until just over a minute to go but the corresponding free throw from Johnson-Kelly as well as pairs of shots from Ashley Tucker (Buffalo, N.Y.), Gordon, and another pair from Johnson-Kelly extended the Bearcats lead to 13-8. Quadaija Langley hit a jumper to give Lander a seven-point lead after the first quarter.

Points were at a premium in the second quarter for Lander as the Blue and Gold hit just a pair of three-pointers from Johnson-Kelly and Cory Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio) while the Sand Sharks closed the Bearcat lead down to two at 21-19 heading into the locker room.

A Gordon layup off a turnover gave Lander a 27-23 lead but Beaufort responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 30-27 lead before a Burgos basket and two pairs of free throws from Johnson-Kelly flipped the scoreboard back into Lander's favor at 33-30 heading into the last quarter of action.

After scoring only 18 points total in the second and third quarters combined, the Lander offense found another gear in the final frame as the Bearcats scored 23 points and shot over 50% from the field.

Johnson-Kelly started the quarter capping off a personal 7-0 run that started at the end of the third to give Lander a 36-30 lead. After that Gordon and Johnson-Kelly alternated making shots to help extend the lead to as much as 13 at 50-37. Down the strech, Johnson-Kelly made four free throws and Langley added a pair to give Lander the 15-point win.

The Bearcats continue their road trip on Saturday as they travel to Clayton State on Saturday for a 1:30 PM tip-off.
