FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Trailing two sets to one, Lander would storm back to take the final two sets and knock off #21 Alaska Anchorage Friday for the Bearcats' first win over a nationally ranked opponent in program history.
Trailing 22-16 in the first set, Lander used kills by Blondie Penaflor and Katie Miller, as well as a block by Lauren Dow and McCayla Willingham and a Seawolf attack error to tie the score at 22. Anchorage would hold on to take the first set 26-24.
The Bearcats would jump out to a 13-9 lead in the second set, but the Seawolves would battle back to tie the set at 13. Back-to-back blocks by Annie Holesinger and Willingham gave Lander back the lead 15-13. Holesinger would record a solo block and then a kill to give the Bearcats a four-point lead. Lander would go on to take the set 25-19 to tie the match at one.
Anchorage would rally in the third set to take a 25-23 victory to put Lander's back against the wall. With the score tied at 14 in the fourth set, The Bearcats got four kills from Miller and a service ace by Ellyn Adams to take a 19-14 lead. After the Seawolves cut the deficit to 20-18, Lander would score five unanswered points to take the set, tie the match up, and send it to a fifth and deciding set.
The teams battled back and forth through the early part of the final set, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead. With the score tied at six, Christina Aguayo would break the tie on a pass from Lauren Dow. Aguayo followed with a service ace and another kill to give Lander a three-point lead. Another kill by Miller would make the score 10-6. Anchorage would not go down without a fight and eventually cut the deficit to one at 14-13. A block by Aguayo and Penaflor would end the set and give the Bearcats the win.
Katie Miller recorded her third double-double of the season with a career-high 30 kills to go with 11 digs to lead Lander. Lauren Dow dished out 44 assists and had 15 digs as she picked up her third-straight double-double. Patricia Pantoja led all players with 21 digs, while Christina Aguayo had 13. Annie Holesinger and Blondie Penaflor each had six blocks, and McCayla Willingham added five.
