MANHELM, PA. – After a stellar freshman campaign at Lander University, David Hunsberger has been named the NWCA Div. II 2022-23 Rookie Wrestler of The Year.
"We are very proud of David and the season he has this year," said head coach R.C. LaHaye. "We are looking forward to the future and the impact he can have on the Bearcat wrestling program."
Hunsberger put together an opening season for the record books. He finished 32-5, which puts him third for single-season victories in program history.
Hunsberger was named by The Open Mat as their National Div. II Rookie of The Year last week.
The South Carolina native went undefeated at the Battle at the Citadel in the first month of the season. After going 2-2 at the Midwest Classic, Hunsberger posted a 12-0 record to close the regular season.
Hunsbergers was named an All-American at the 2023 Div. II National Championships after finishing fourth, good for the best finish among freshmen. He is also a Super Region II champion at 165 and was named the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Freshman of The Year. Hunsberger was also an All-SACC First Team nomination at 165.
