Bearcats Fall to #10 Flagler in Conference Title Game

Kelly, Suchan, and Peterson named to All-Tournament Team

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team found themselves in a one goal game several times in the second half but couldn't get closer than that as the tenth-ranked Flagler Saints came away for a 16-12 victory in the Gulf South Conference Title game on Sunday afternoon on the Florida coast.

The Bearcats conclude their season at 11-7, the 11 wins being the most for the program in their short history. Meanwhile, Flagler wins their first ever GSC Title, improving to 17-1 and almost assuredly securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament where they were ranked third in the latest regional poll.

Brooke Kelly led the offense with five goals while Alyssa Suchan added a hat trick and Emmy Peterson added a pair of goals as well. The attacking trio were also honored as members of the all-tournament team.

The Bearcats got off to a hot start as they got the first two goals of the game from Suchan and Amelia McCauley to give the Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.

However, Flagler would respond with a 7-0 run over the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter where they would dominate in the draw circle and would hold Lander scoreless for almost a full 15 minutes of game time.

The Bearcats would not be phased as goals from Peterson and Kelly would get the game back down to a 7-4 deficit before Flagler added another goal to make it 8-5. But Lander would take momentum into halftime as Alyssa Suchan would score with 1:12 left and Brooke Kelly would score a man-up goal with under 30 seconds left to bring the Bearcats within two at 8-6 heading into the break.

After the break the teams would keep exchanging goals as the Bearcats would get the deficit down to one goal four separate times in the third quarter on three goals from Brooke Kelly and a goal from Emmy Peterson but the Saints would have a response each time to keep a two-goal 12-10 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

The Saints would stretch the lead out to three to start the quarter but Suchan would quickly respond to cut it back to two. However, after that Suchan goal the Bearcats would be held without a shot for almost seven minutes of game time as the Saints stretched a 3-0 run over eight minutes to make it 16-11 and really put the game out of reach. Izzy Olson would get a goal with under two minutes left but the Bearcats could not do any more damage after that.
