Baseball falls to Belmont Abbey 16-8

GREENWOOD – Leading 8-6 after the sixth inning, the Lander baseball team would allow 10 runs in the final three innings as they fell 16-8 to the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at Dolny Stadium on Tuesday.

Lander falls to 6-13 overall while Belmont Abbey moves to 15-5 overall.

Dalton Stroud led the way with three hits and three runs. Connor Droze, Will McClellan, Tyler Prell, Chandler Moeller and Matthew Burgess all had two hits as well.

McClellan and Chris Manriquez were tied for the lead in RBI with two each.

The Crusaders would be first to strike with two runs coming home to score for the visitors in the top of the first.

Lander got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. With two out Tyler Prell first singled before moving to third on a double down the left-field line by Chandler Moeller. Prell eventually scored on a single to right field from Matthew Burgess.

Belmont Abbey retook its two-run lead in the top of the third when an error allowed a runner to score to make it 3-1 Crusaders.

Lander responded in the bottom of the third with a two-run single from Chris Manriquez that scored Connor Droze and Dalton Stroud. Moeller would give Lander a 4-3 edge with a single to left field to score Manriquez.

Belmont Abbey would come right back with three runs in the top of the fourth before Lander's bats would come back with more runs.

Droze would slap a double down the right field line with two outs to score Stroud while Will McClellan singled down the left field line the next at-bat to bring home Droze to tie the game 6-6. The Bearcats would also see McClellan single to right center to score Stroud and a throwing error that brought home McClellan to give Lander an 8-6 lead.

The Crusaders would rally in the final three innings, scoring 10 runs to take a 16-8 victory over the Bearcats.

Bennett Sloper got the start for Lander and went three innings. Sloper allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out two.

Tyler Overholt picked up the loss after allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits in a third of an inning of work.

Dawson Campbell, Luke Johnson, Tyler Bowen, Mathew Ellis, Garrett Major and Braeden Burton all saw relief appearances as well.

The Bearcats return to action at Dolny Stadium as they host the Emmanuel College Lions for a three-game series starting on Friday, March 10 for a 4 pm start.
