SALISBURY, N.C. - After suffering their first two losses of the season against #12 Wingate and Limestone, the Lander Women's Lacrosse team got back to winning ways as they used six different goal scorers to top the Catawba Indians in an offensive shootout, 20-11, on Saturday afternoon.
Alyssa Suchan recorded a program record ten points in a game with five goals and five assists, beating her old mark of nine which she did once last season and once in the inaugural 2020 season.
Mickey Burnett and
Mary Claire Robinson each added four goals while
Brooke Kelly and
Izzy Olson each added three of their own as well.
Kasey Bronco was the sixth and final goalscorer for the Bearcats.
Lander would get out to a quick 6-0 lead as Mickey Burnett would record a hat trick within the first ten minutes of game action while Mary Claire Robinson added a pair and Suchan rounded up the scoring run.
Catawba would get a goal back before Burnett would get her fourth goal of the quarter off Suchan's second assist. However, the Indians would score two goals and seemed to be going into the second quarter with momentum before Suchan would stop the quick run with her second goal to give Lander an 8-3 lead after the first quarter.
Izzy Olson would restore the six goal Lander lead at the beginning of the second but Catawba would add two straight goals to cut the lead back down to four at 9-5. The teams would trade goals to get the score to 11-7 before Kelly and Robinson scored three straight goals to extend the Lander lead to 14-7.
Catawba would get a goal back but Suchan would respond again right before the quarter horn and Lander led 15-8 at the halftime break.
After both teams totaled 23 goals in the first half, the pace slowed down a little the last 30 minutes as Suchan would add two more in the third quarter and Olson and Robinson rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter to give Lander the nine goal win.
The Bearcats hit the road again on Wednesday as they travel to the mountains of North Carolina to face the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, their fifth straight opponent from the South Atlantic Conference. That game is scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
