Baseball falls twice to Augusta on Friday

AUGUSTA, GA. - The Lander baseball team would fall twice in a doubleheader to Augusta 8-5 and 12-7 on Friday.

Lander drops to 13-20 overall and 9-8 in the PBC while Augusta moves to 16-15 overall and 9-11 in the PBC.

Lander (5) - Augusta (8)

Connor Droze and Gary Garrett would lead the Bearcats in hits with two each. Droze would lead the team in RBI with three.

The Bearcats and Jaguars exchanged runs in the opening frame.

Connor Droze got the Bearcats going with an RBI single to center field to bring home Oliver Zohn from second.

Augusta would use an RBI single of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

After a scoreless second frame of action, Lander would take a narrow 2-1 lead. Will McClellan would bring home Gary Garrett from third after reaching on a fielder's choice.

Augusta would retake the lead in the fifth, with four Jaguars coming around to score. Two runs would score after an error was committed by Lander to give the Jaguars a 3-2 edge while a two-run home run later in the inning put Augusta ahead 5-2.

Augusta would smash another long ball in the sixth, as a three-run homerun down the left field line gave the home side an 8-2 lead.

Lander would find a spark in the top of the eighth as Droze would blast a two-run home run over the right-center field fence to get Lander within four runs. The Bearcats would cut the Jaguars' lead to three after Matthew Burgess connected on an RBI single to left field to score Ethan Wilder.

Nick Foray would get the start and would be awarded the loss. Foray went 4.2 innings where he allowed five runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out four. Matthew Ellis, Bennett Sloper and Tyler Overholt would all see relief appearances as well. Sloper and Overholt combined for two innings of scoreless baseball with just one hit combined.

Lander (7) - Augusta (12)

Oliver Zohn, Will McClellan and Matthew Burgess would all have three-hit games for the Bearcats in the second game of the day. Zohn and McClellan each added three RBI as well.

The Bearcats and Jaguars would once again score in the opening frame of action.

Lander would score on an RBI single to center field from McClellan to bring home Zohn from third. Augusta would counter on a run scored on an error. The Jaguars would take a slim one-run lead after a single was hit to center field to score a runner from third.

The Bearcats would come out swinging in the second inning. Chris Manriquez and Burgess would each reach on singles to begin the inning while the pair would come home on an RBI single to center field from Zohn to give the Blue and Gold a 3-2 lead. Lander would score on yet another RBI single, as McClellan would go to left field to score Garrett and Zohn to push the Bearcats in front 5-2.

Lander would continue to play small ball in the third. Wilder and Lucas Martino would both single to right field to begin the inning. Burgess would get hit by a pitch later in the inning to load the bases before Bennet Nooe would get plunked to bring home Wilder to make it 6-2 Lander.

Zohn would increase Lander's lead in the fifth as he singled through the right side to score Burgess from second base.

The Jaguars would get within a run of Lander in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam before a solo shot to left center tied the game at 7-7.

The bottom of the sixth would see four more runs come around for the home side as the Jaguars would go up 11-7.

Augusta would score one more run in the 8th on yet another home run.

Cooper King would get the start in the second game of the day. King would go four innings where he allowed six runs on five hits while striking out one.

Evan Demurias would be awarded the loss. He would allow two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

Bennett Nance, Tyler Bowen and Michael Nastro all saw relief appearances as well. Bowen threw a scoreless inning of relief where he allowed one hit, walked two while striking out three.

Lander and Augusta conclude the series on Sunday for a 1 pm start.
