GREENWOOD – The Lander Bearcats used a balanced scoring attack as they overwhelmed Georgia College 80-58 in Peach Belt Conference action Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 18-7 overall and 10-5 in the Peach Belt.
The Bobcats fell to 7-17, 3-12.
The Blue and Gold trail only North Georgia (12-3), Augusta (11-4) and USC Aiken (11-4) in the PBC standings.
Tommy Moore made four 3-pointers and led the Bearcats with 12 points.
Nigel Colvin scored 11 points for Lander while Jared Sherfield added 10 points while leading the team with seven rebounds. Jaylon Pugh also scored 10 points for the Bearcats.
Navaughn Maise paced Lander with six assists while Ajang Aguek blocked three shots.
Brendan Rigsbee led Georgia College with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Ian Davis added 13 points for the visitors.
Lander scored 10 unanswered points to take a 15-4 lead with 14:14 left in the opening half. Maise was credited with a basket on goal-tending, Colvin swished a 3-pointer from the right corner, Stanford sliced inside for a layup, and Moore knocked down a trey.
Richard Crawford's free throws pulled Georgia College within 17-10. But the Bearcats answered with a 12-2 run as Aguek scored twice including a dunk, Jacob Cooper made two layups with one on a cross-over move, and Dominic Stanford and Pugh also scored inside as the advantage grew to 29-12.
Cooper nailed a trey from well beyond the top of the key, giving Lander a 36-18 lead with three minutes to go.
Aguek made two spectacular defensive plays in the next minute-plus, blocking a Christian Koneman dunk attempt and also blocking Chip Rierson's driving layup try.
Cooper flipped an over-the-shoulder interior pass through two defenders to Sherfield for a layup for the final Bearcat points of the first half as the Blue and Gold led 38-23 at the intermission.
Rigsbee's 3-pointer cut the Bobcat deficit to 43-33 with 16:40 left in the game.
Lander responded with a 3-point tear as Pugh made two treys while Moore, Stanford and Sherfield added one apiece as the lead grew to 61-36 with 12:30 to go. Connor McKay also made a floater during the 18-3 run.
The lead grew to 30 when Moore made a 3-pointer from the top of the key, increasing the Bearcat advantage to 70-40 at the 8:43 mark.
Colvin ended Lander's six-minute scoring drought from the floor with a 3-pointer, making it 77-53 with 2:10 to go. Colvin added another trey about a minute later to close the scoring for the Bearcats.
