Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bearcats only Allow 14 Second Half Points in 61-42 win over Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Lander Women's Basketball team held the Mars Hill Lions to four field goals and 15% shooting in the second half to pull away for their fifth straight win, 61-42, on Wednesday evening inside Stanford Arena.

WyKira Johnson-Kelly (Franklinville, N.J.) led the way with 15 points and six rebounds while Tanyia Gordon (Plant City, Fla.), coming off being named PBC Player of the Week on Monday, added 13 points of her own. Both Johnson-Kelly and Gordon each added three steals on the defensive end as well.

Quadaija Langley (Travelers Rest, S.C.) set the tone early with a three-pointer 15 seconds into the game and Alicia Burgos (Milwaukee, Wisc.) made a layup for a quick 5-0 run to open the game for the Bearcats. After that, Mars Hill started to grow back into the game as they took a one-point lead at 6-5 but Lander responded with an 11-5 run sparked by an Amani Melendez (Woodbridge, Va.) three to take a 16-11 lead. The Lions would add a three late in the quarter to make the score 16-14 after one.

Mars Hill opened up a four-point lead to start the second quarter as the Bearcats did not make a field goal for over six minutes of game time. However, good defense and pairs of free throws from Langley and Gordon kept the Bearcats within one possession for Johnson-Kelly to tie the game at 24-all. That was the last time that Mars Hill had the lead in the game as Gordon capped off a 6-0 run to give Lander at 28-24. Mars Hill tied the game at 28 to end the half but it would be the last time the game would be tied.

The Bearcats opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run, bookended by threes from Johnson-Kelly and Cory Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio) and held the Lions without a made bucket of any kind until a layup at the 5:43 mark. However, the Bearcats responded with another 9-0 run to increase the lead to 46-30 before the Lions second and final basket of the quarter made it 46-33 heading into the final ten minutes.

In total the Lions only shot 2-12 from the field in the third quarter while the Bearcats shot 6-12 and went 3-4 from beyond the arc to establish the 13-point lead.

Mars Hill got the lead down to 12 on two occasions to start the fourth, including off a layup at the 6:22 mark, but that layup was the last field goal that Mars Hill made as the Lions only added three free throws the rest of the way as the Bearcat defense locked down to secure the 19-point win.

The Lander Women's Basketball team returns home on Monday as they will face rival Erskine for the 61st time in program history. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
