GREENWOOD - The Lander men's soccer team stunned No. 6 Clayton State 4-3 at Van Taylor Stadium after a pair of late goals gave the Bearcats a 4-3 victory.
Lander moves to 5-4-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the PBC while Clayton State drops to 9-2-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the PBC.
How It Happened
The Bearcats used a pair of goals in the first 13 minutes of play to take a 2-0 edge.
In the fifth minute of action, Jonah Miller tucked away his second goal of the season with Zach Meyer and Christian Hatley assisting.
Lander struck again in the 13th minute with Meyer scoring his second of the season with Jaime Escos Castillo and Hatley assisting on the goal.
Clayton State would catch fire with three unanswered goals coming from the Lakers to eventually take a 3-2 lead late in the 65th minute of play.
Julien Sagnol got the game tied at 3-3 in the 69th minute after he put away a rebound from an attempt from Jed Smith.
Hatley would secure his seventh goal of the season as he converted a penalty kick to give Lander the 4-3 edge in the 74th minute.
Game Notes/ Historical Facts
- Lander's four goals is a new season-high. The previous was the three scored in a 3-0 victory over Montevallo.
- Lander is now 27-11-4 all-time against Clayton State and 13-3-2 at home against the Lakers. The Bearcats haven't lost to Clayton State at home since October 20, 2007.
- This is the first time since the season opener that Lander has allowed more than two goals.
- Since losing to then No. 16 Clayton State 2-1 on September 23, Lander has gone 3-0-2.
- Lander has scored 14 of its 20 goals this season in the first half.
- Since getting shutout in back-to-back games on September 8 and 10 Lander has gone 5-1-3.
- Lander had four different goal-scorers.
- With Sagnol's goal, nine different Bearcats have scored this season.
- Hatley not only leads Lander in goals (7) but is tied with Rashawn Kellman for assists (3) and leads the squad in points with 17.
- Juan Rodriguez set a career-high in saves with 10. His previous high was seven at Clayton State on September 23.
- The 13 combined points by Bearcats is a new season high while Hatley's four-point performance sets the new benchmark for most individual points in a game.
