GREENWOOD – After a last-minute jumper from
Chandler Lindsey to force overtime after the Bearcats trailed by 10 at the half, the Lander men's basketball team would ultimately fall to the Flagler Saints 97-86 in overtime at Horne Arena Saturday afternoon.
Lander drops to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the PBC while Flagler moves to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the PBC.
Noah Dunn led all scorers with 38 points after hitting eight 3-pointers against the Saints.
Jared Sherfield and
Tommy Moore joined Dunn in double-figure scoring with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Lander and Flagler would be stuck together for most of the first half.
The Saints would be first to strike after a jump shot fell 16 seconds into the contest. Lander would strike back with a 3-pointer from
Tommy Moore with 19:17 left in the first.
The Saints would go up 7-4 before a 3-pointer from
Jared Sherfield tied the game while a layup from
Ajang Aguek gave the Bearcats a 9-7 edge with 16:41 left. Sherfield would get involved once more, this time hitting a jumper to put Lander up 11-7.
The Saints would drain a 3-pointer with 14:57 to get within one point of Lander before Moore made a pair of free throws to make it a 13-10 game.
Flagler would hit a pair of 3-pointers while
Noah Dunn would hit one of his own to have the contest tied 16-16 with 13:24 remaining.
The Saints would take a 22-19 lead with 11:36 left after a 3 fell for the guest, but a
Nigel Colvin layup and a 3-pointer from Colvin gave the Bearcats a 24-22 lead with just over 10 minutes to go. Lander would increase its lead to 26-22 with another layup coming from Colvin with 8:54 left.
The two teams would be tied at 31 after 3-pointers fell for both sides. The score would be tied at 37 with 3:39 remaining after Moore hit a 3-pointer to tie the contest.
The remainder of the first half would see the Saints go on a 10-0 run to take a 47-37 lead into the half.
Lander shot 13-of-28 percent from the field while going 8-of-21 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Flagler went 17-of-28 from the field while going 8-of-16 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
The Bearcats would begin the second half with a 3-pointer from Moore before Lindsey hit a layup to get the score to 47-42 Flagler. Dunn would hit a free throw after Sherfield hit a pair to get within two points with 15:50 left in the second half. A 3-pointer from Dunn made it a 54-53 game before Dunn would score once again, this time with a layup to give Lander a 55-54 advantage with 14:37 left.
Flagler would retake the lead for a brief moment before it was once again Dunn hitting a 3-pointer to put Lander back on top, this time 58-56.
The Saints pushed the pace to go up by six with 11:30 before Dunn made a free throw and then hit a 3-pointer after Aguek nabbed a missed rebound to get Lander back within two points.
Lindsey would hit a jumper with 9:56 to tie the contest at 64.
Flagler would go up by four points after a layup and a pair of free throws fell for the Saints while yet another long-range splash from Dunn made it a one-point game.
The two sides would trade baskets for the remainder of the second half before Lindsey hit a jumper with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 79. Flagler would have a chance to win the game, but a missed layup sent the Bearcats and Saints into overtime.
Lander went 13-of-31 from the field in the second half along with going 6-of-20 from 3-point range and 10-of-17 from the free throw line. Flagler went 11-of-23 from the field along with going 4-of-11 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Flagler would begin the overtime period with five consecutive points before a free throw from Dunn stopped the bleeding.
The Saints would then hit a 3-pointer and make a layup to go up by nine with 2:42 left in overtime. Lander would cut the lead down to seven with a 3-pointer from Dunn with 37 seconds left, but the Saints had done their damage and would come away with the win.
Lander shot 28-of-71 from the field for the game while going 15-of-50 from 3-point range and 15-of-25 from the free throw line. Flagler went 31-of-55 from the field for the game along with 13-of-28 from 3-point range and 22-of-22 from the free throw line.
Lander heads to Young Harris for its next contest as it battles the Mountain Lions on February 1 for a 7:30 pm start.
