Lander places five scorers in double figures, extends win streak to four

GREENWOOD – Jared Sherfield scored 15 points while Tommy Moore added a season-high 14 points as the Lander Bearcats built a big lead on their way to a 73-64 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 14-4 overall, 6-2 in the Peach Belt with its fourth consecutive win. The Hurricanes fell to 8-8, 2-6.

Sherfield amassed 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Bearcats. Moore was next with 14 points, while Chandler Lindsey contributed 13 points, three assists and three steals. Moore also had three assists for the Blue and Gold.

Ajank Aguek scored 10 points while leading Lander with eight rebounds. Dominic Stanford was the the Bearcats' fifth double-figure scorer with 10 points.

Devon Higgs paced Georgia Southwestern with 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Phillip Burwell and Jamari Dean added 12 points apiece for the Hurricanes.

Leading 7-5, the Bearcats went on a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to 16-5. Lindsey drove the baseline for an open layup, Aguek made a layup in traffic, Moore hit one of two free throws, Stanford made a tough layup, and Noah Dunn hit a long jumper just inside the arc.

Lander went on another scoring run of seven straight. Stanford made a spin move for a layup, Sherfield converted a three-point play with a driving shot off the glass, and Stanford added two free throws for a 28-13 advantage with 4:46 left in the first half.

Moore helped the Bearcats extend their lead with a tough driving layup, a lob pass to Stanford for a layup, and two free throws. Dunn made a shifty move under the basket for a layup at the buzzer as Lander led 38-24 at the break.

Lindsey made a driving layup early in the second half to surpass 1,000 career points. The Coker University transfer's basket gave the Bearcats a 42-28 advantage.

Sherfield's dunk off a back-door pass from Lindsey gave Lander a 50-32 lead at the 16-minute mark.

Lindsey's three-point play ended a Bearcat scoring drought as they led 55-41 midway through the second half.

Stanford muscled through two defenders for a basket in the paint, increasing Lander's lead to 63-49 with 6:06 left.

Higgs answered with a 3-pointer, starting a 9-0 Hurricanes run. Dean finished the run with a basket, pulling Georgia Southwestern within 63-58 at the four-minute mark.

Burwell's floater in the lane pulled the Hurricanes within a possession at 65-62 with 2:26 to go.

Lindsey's bucket in the paint ended Georgia Southwestern's 13-2 run, giving the Bearcats a five-point lead. Sherfield added two free throws, making it 69-62 with 1:25 left.

Moore answered Brian Tolefree's dunk with two free throws, Sherfield got a steal, and then Lindsey was fouled and made two free throws for a 73-64 lead with 40 seconds to go.
