Sherfield celebrates birthday with 16 points to lead Lander past Clayton State

GREENWOOD – Jared Sherfield celebrated his birthday with a double-double, leading the Lander Bearcats to an 80-55 Peach Belt Conference victory over Clayton State Monday afternoon at Horne Arena.

Lander improved to 12-4 with its second victory over the Lakers in three days. The Bearcats, who won 76-63 at Clayton State Saturday, are 4-2 in the Peach Belt.

The Lakers fell to 2-13, 0-5.

Sherfield paced Lander with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the MLK Day game.

Chandler Lindsey added 15 points for the Bearcats, Dominic Stanford scored 12 points, and Tommy Moore contributed 11 points. Jaylon Pugh and Lindsey paced Lander with four assists apiece.

Travis Harper led Clayton State with 16 points, Brian Coffey scored 15 points and Dudley Blackwell contributed 14 points. Wes Williams paced the Lakers with nine boards.

The Bearcats out-rebounded Clayton State 44-29.

Stanford and Lindsey each hit 3-pointers as Lander built a 12-3 lead in the game's first six minutes.

Clayton State scored seven unanswered points to close within 12-10. But Sherfield made a 3-pointer and converted a three-point play, giving the Bearcats an 18-10 advantage with 11:24 left in the opening half.

Pugh's 3-pointer from the top of the key gave Lander a 22-14 lead with 8:26 to go. Blackwell's put-back pulled the Lakers within 22-19 with 7:26 left. But that would be as close as it would get.

The Bearcats took their first double-digit lead at 29-19 when Sherfield drove down the late for a dunk, Lindsey made a layup, and Pugh swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Lander took its largest lead of the half when Lindsey made a 3-pointer after Connor McKay saved a ball by diving out of bounds, making it 38-21 with 1:33 to go.

Lindsey's trey would be the final points of the half as the Bearcats led 38-21 at the break. They closed the first half on a 16-2 run, making seven of 11 shots during that span to just one of seven for Clayton State.

The Lakers opened the second half with three unanswered baskets to close within 38-27.

Moore and Sherfield made 3-pointers, helping increase Lander's lead to 46-28 with 16 minutes to go.

Sherfield's dunk off Pugh's steal and pass gave the Bearcats their first 20-point lead at 52-32 with 13:52 left.

McKay followed with a finger roll basket in the lane, a driving layup, and a two-handed dunk off Nigel Colvin's steal and long bounce pass, giving Lander a 58-32 advantage at the 11-minute mark.

Stanford drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to increase the Bearcat lead to 63-36 with 8:07 to go.

Navaughn Maise's layup upped Lander's lead to 70-47 with 3:47 left.

Lindsey banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key, making it 77-50 at the two-minute mark. Maise added a trey one minute later to end the Bearcat scoring.
