GREENWOOD - The Lander Bearcats scored two goals in the first half, as that was enough to clinch a 2-1 victory over the Flagler Saints at
Van Taylor Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Lander moves to 5-2-4 overall and 4-0-2 in the PBC while Flagler drops to 4-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the PBC.
Since taking over the program in 2015, head coach
Lee Squires has gone 48-9-4 in home contests with the Bearcats.
Lander outshot the Saints 11-5 while the shots on goal were much closer. Lander put four shots on target compared to the three from Flagler.
The contest didn't see its first goal until the 14th minute of action. Taking a free kick on the left side of the field,
Kevin Rubaszewski went to the far right post to find
Alistair Danjon who headed away the opening goal to put Lander up 1-0.
The Saints would strike back with a goal of their own in the 21st minute to even the game 1-1.
Lander would respond quickly, as the Blue and Gold would retake the lead in the 23rd minute. On the right side of the field, Danjon would send a cross to
Marco Gueli who'd take a touch and tuck away his sixth goal of the season to put Lander in front 2-1.
Neither side was able to score past that mark, as the Bearcats would hold on for the home victory.
Lorenzo Ferrari made two saves in the win and is now 2-0-2 on the season.
The Bearcats have Saturday off but return to action at
Van Taylor Stadium next Wednesday to host USC Aiken.
