MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - In a battle of the top two teams in the Peach Belt Conference, Lander defeated Georgia College 3-1 Thursday night.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but Lander slowly battled back, and a block by Maya Walker and Madilyn Reed tied the set up at seven. The two teams battled back and forth. With Lander leading 19-18, Walker would give the Bearcats the serve with a kill and make it 20-18. Back-to-back service aces by Maddie Moss made it a four-point lead. Georgia College cut the lead to two points at 23-21 but kills by Katie Miller and Annie Holesinger gave Lander the win. The Bobcats would come back to win the second set 25-23 to tie the match at one. Trailing 5-1 in the third set, the Bearcats scored eight of the next nine points to take a 9-6 lead. Later in the set, the Bobcats made it a one-point game at 22-21, but the Bearcats scored three unanswered points to take the set and a 2-1 lead.
Lander came out on fire in the fourth set, racing to a 10-1 lead. The Bobcats battled back and eventually tied the set at 20. Lander proceeded to outscore them 5-1 to win the set 25-21 and win the match.
Walker led all players with 13 kills, while Holesinger and Miller added nine. Madilyn Reed dished out 42 assists and had 16 digs for a double-double, and Patricia Pantoja had a game-high 38 digs.
