Baseball falls to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday

BELMONT, N.C. – The Lander baseball team was unable to keep its winning streak going as it fell 12-5 at Belmont Abbey on Wednesday.

Lander falls to 18-17 overall while Belmont Abbey moves to 23-13 overall.

Landon Dupert and Bradley Davis both had two hits to lead the Bearcats in that department. Bennet Nooe, Dupert and Davis all had an RBI each.

The Crusaders would be first to score, as a sac fly to center field plated a run from third in the bottom of the first.

After a scoreless second inning for both sides, Lander would score its first run in the top of the third. Caleb Singleton hit an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch before coming around on a single from Dupert to right field to tie the game 1-1.

Belmont Abbey would strike back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run RBI single to put the Crusaders up 3-1.

The fourth inning saw the Bearcats score three runs to jump out in front. Davis brought home Ethan Wilder on a sac fly to left field to bring Lander within a run while a fielder's choice hit into by Matthew Burgess and a throwing error helped Nooe come home to tie the game 3-3. A wild pitch later in the inning brought home Gary Garrett to put Lander in front 4-3.

The Crusaders would retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth after a three-run performance. Belmont Abbey would score in every inning going forward while the Bearcats wouldn't score until the top of the ninth where Nooe hit an infield single to score Dupert.

Michael Nastro got the start against Belmont Abbey and went three innings where he allowed three runs, two earned on four hits while striking out six. Braeden Burton was awarded the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in an inning of work. Kurt Rogers, Garrett Major, Tyler Bowen, Zach Pellegrino and Bryce Jackson all saw relief appearances as well.

Lander returns to Dolny Stadium to host the Flagler Saints for a three-game PBC series starting on Friday, April 8.
