YOUNG HARRIS, GA. – The Lander baseball team rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth inning against Young Harris, but four runs for the Mountain Lions would give the home side a 10-9 victory on Sunday.
Lander falls to 20-25 overall and 9-14 in the PBC while Young Harris moves to 32-14 overall and 16-8 in the PBC.
Ian Jenkins led the way with three hits for the Bearcats. Landon Dupert had four RBI on two hits which featured a home run. Walker McDowell had three RBI on two hits.
Much like the past two games, Lander was first to score. The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after McDowell hit into a fielder's choice that brought home Ethan Wilder. It wouldn't be until the eighth inning that any offense would be produced for either side.
The top of the inning saw two runs come across for the Bearcats. McDowell would get the scoring started with an RBI single to center field to score Matthew Burgess while Dupert would hit an RBI double to right center later in the inning to score McDowell to give Lander a 3-0 edge.
Young Harris would counter with six runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Mountain Lions used three home runs to score their six runs and take a 6-3 lead into the ninth inning.
Lander would respond with six runs of its own in the top of the ninth. Jenkins came in to score early in the inning on a wild pitch while back-to-back RBI singles from Burgess and McDowell tied the game at 6-6. Dupert would cap the scoring off with a three-run blast to right field to push Lander ahead 9-6.
Young Harris would score four runs in the final frame with a run coming in on a wild pitch, an RBI single and a walk-off RBI double helped give Young Harris its 10 runs on the day.
Bennett Nance got the start against Young Harris and went 3.1 innings where he allowed no runs on four hits while striking out three. Garrett Major was awarded the loss after giving up six runs, all earned, on three hits in 0.1 innings of work. Zach Pellegrino, Bryce Jackson, Bennett Sloper and Braeden Burton all saw relief appearances against the Mountain Lions.
Lander returns to Dolny Stadium for a four-game homestand to close out the regular season starting with a visit from Belmont Abbey on Tuesday, April 26.
