Burgess' six RBI game not enough - Baseball falls to Erskine on the road

DUE WEST, S.C. – Playing in back-to-back days, the Lander baseball team fell to Erskine 16-13 Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Lander drops to 15-16 overall while Erskine moves to 17-15.

Four Bearcats had multi-hit games, with Landon Dupert and Matthew Burgess leading the way with three hits. Walker McDowell and Ethan Wilder both had two hits while Burgess had six RBI against the Flying Fleet.

After Erskine plated a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, Lander responded with six runs in the top of the second. Wilder started the inning with a triple down the right-field line and eventually came around to score on a Gary Garrett single to left single to tie the game at 1-1. Burgess would hit a three-run bomb to score himself, Garett and Blake Marrs to push Lander ahead 4-1 while Dupert would bash a two-run home run to bring put Lander up 6-1. The Flying Fleet wouldn't stay silent, as Erskine brought home four runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-5.

After a scoreless third inning, both Lander and Erskine would score a run in the fourth. McDowell would score Garrett from second on an RBI single while Erskine would use an RBI single of its own to keep it a one-run contest.

The fifth inning saw even more runs for both squads. The Bearcats would go up by two runs after a Bennett Nooe double down the right-field line scored Wilder to bring Lander's lead to 8-6. Burgess would slap a double down the left-field line later in the inning to score Nooe and Mars to push Lander ahead 10-6 while an RBI single from Dupert to right-center to score Burgess to make it an 11-6 contest for Lander. Erskine would plate a pair of runs off back-to-back RBI doubles to cut Lander's lead to three runs.

Lander and Erskine would trade runs in the sixth inning, with both teams scoring two runs. Wilder would score on a wild pitch from third while an RBI single from Burgess to left field scored Garrett to put Lander ahead 13-8 before Erskine's two runs in the bottom of the inning brought the score to 13-10.

Neither team was able to score in the seventh, but that would change drastically for Erskine in the eighth. The Flying Fleet were able to score six runs on three hits to go up 16-13 and close the game out in the ninth.

Braeden Burton got the start against Erskine and went two innings after allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits. Evan Mauldin was given the loss after allowing six runs, all earned, on three hits. Garrett Major, Kurt Rogers, Zach Pellegrino, Tyliss Roper, Tyler Bowen and Brandon Childers all saw relief appearances.
