Men's basketball looks to keep their season alive - battles Flagler in the PBC semifinals on Friday

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's basketball team is in the semifinals after upsetting No. 3 Georgia College in the PBC quarterfinals on Tuesday.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats took down Georgia College on the road on Tuesday, 83-79 to advance to the PBC semifinals to battle Flagler.
  • Tommy Moore led the Bearcats in scoring with 19. DaJuan Moorer, Nigel Colvin and Jared Sherfield all joined Moore in double-figure scoring.
  • Coach Omar Wattad also earned his first postseason victory as the head coach of the Bearcats.
  • With the win Tuesday night, Lander has defeated Georgia College on the road for the first time since February 25, 2015, when the Bearcats won 83-65. Lander would hold strong and come away with the 83-79 victory.
  • This will be just the second time that Lander and Flagler have met in the PBC tournament.
  • The first time the two schools met in the postseason was in 2020 when Lander sent Flagler back to Florida with an 83-60 loss at Horne Arena. DeShundre Rucker and Moorer both were in double figure scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively.
  • Lander split the regular-season series with the Saints 1-1, with each team winning on their home court.
  • Lander upset the nationally-ranked Saints to conclude the regular season on Senior Day on February 26. Lander won 74-66.
  • Rucker had a huge game, leading the Bearcats in scoring with 18 while going 8-of-11 from the field. Moorer had a double-double with 15 points and 19 rebounds.
  • Dominic Stanford was recently named the PBC Freshman of The Year. Stanford becomes Lander's first-ever Freshman of The Year winner.
  • Sherfield also picked up post-season honors as he was named to the All-PBC Third-Team.
  • Colvin continues to lead Lander in scoring, as he averages 11.1 points per game. Deandre Robinson is second with 10.5 points per game and Sherfield is third with 9.7.
  • Sherfield also leads the Bearcats in rebounds per game with 6.2, assists per game with 3.6 and steals per game with 1.4. Moorer leads Lander in blocks per game with 1.0.
  • Flagler battles North Georgia in the PBC quarterfinals and advanced with a 69-59 victory at home.
  • Lottie Jaizec, the 2022 co-PBC player of The Year, scored a team-high 25 points and brought in eight rebounds in the win. Derrick Ellis Jr. was the only other Saint to finish with double figures in scoring with 17 points. Chris Metzger had a team-high 12 rebounds against the Nighthawks.
  • Lottie leads the Saints with 23 points per game. He's the only Saint to average double-figure scoring this season. He also leads the team in assists with 5.0 per game
  • Jalen Barr leads Flagler in rebounds with 7.9 per game and blocks per game with 1.4 while Ellis Jr. leads the way in steals with 2.0 per game.
  • With Augusta being the highest remaining seed, the semifinals and finals will both be hosted by the Jaguars. Augusta will take on Columbus State at 7:30 pm on Friday.
