Baseball battles No. 20 North Greenville and Erskine on the road for a pair of midweek contests

GREENWOOD – After a tough conference series against Georgia Southwestern, the Lander baseball team will travel for a pair of non-conference games with trips to North Greenville and Erskine this week.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats are coming off a series against Georgia Southwestern where they went 1-2 against the Hurricanes.
  • Lander took game two of the series 15-10. The Bearcats lost game one 4-1 while falling 13-5 in game three.
  • The Bearcats are now 15-14 overall after the recent conference series.
  • Vincent DeRubeis hit .462 last week. He had six hits, two doubles, four RBI and scored five times as well. Tyler Prell, Walker McDowell and Gary Garrett all hit .300 or above as well. Prell had five hits, two doubles along with seven RBI. McDowell had his first home run as a Bearcat along with two doubles while Garrett had three hits, two RBI and walked five times.
  • Lander has played both Erskine and North Greenville multiple times this season already.
  • The Bearcats are 1-3 against the Crusaders and Flying Fleet this season. Lander started the season splitting a two-game series at Dolny Stadium while going 0-2 against North Greenville just a few days later.
  • North Greenville will be the third ranked opponent Lander has faced this season. The Bearcats are currently 3-5 against teams ranked in the top-25 so far this season.
  • DeRubeis is leading the Bearcats in batting average with a .372 clip so far this season. He also leads the Blue and Gold in runs scored (28), hits (32), home runs (6) and RBI (29) and is tied for walks (20).
  • Bennett Sloper, Bennett Nance and Evan Mauldin are all tied with three wins on the season.
  • Garrett Major leads the Bearcats in ERA with a 2.57 this season. Zach Pellegrino leads the way with 16 appearances with Kurt Rogers, Braeden Burton and Mauldin are all tied for second with 13 appearances.
  • North Greenville is 26-5 on the season and 15-3 in Conference Carolinas. The Crusaders are on an eight-game winning streak that most recently saw a series sweep of Mount Olive.

  • The Flying Fleet won a doubleheader against King University to go 2-1 against the Tornado to stop a three-game losing streak.
  • Erskine went 1-2 against North Greenville earlier this season.
  • Kane Fisher leads the Flying Fleet in batting average with a .372 average. Armando Becerra has the lead in hits with 40 while Cal Bocchino is second with 38 and leads the Flying Fleet with 33 RBI. Fisher also has the lead in doubles with 12 and home runs with five.
  • Jonny Hummel has an ERA of 0.00 through 12 appearances. Hummel has seven saves and 20.2 innings of work this season. He's allowed just five hits, walking 10 and striking out 34 and holds a 2-0 record.
  • Ira Clifton owns a 4-0 record through 13 appearances and 13.2 innings of work. Allan Saathoff leads the Flying Fleet with 56 strikeouts this season.
  • North Greenville will travel to UNC Pembroke for a three-game conference series starting April 1. Erskine makes its way to Chowan for a conference series starting April 1 while Lander will host August for a conference series beginning on April 1.
