Lander baseball stops losing skid - Defeats Francis Marion 7-4 at home

GREENWOOD – Losing its last four straight, the Lander baseball team returned home to Dolny Stadium and put together a solid 7-4 victory over former conference foe Francis Marion on Tuesday.

Matthew Burgess and Landon Dupert both had two-hit nights along with having an RBI each. Chase Dougherty notched his first hit of the season with a three-run blast to left field.

Lander scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first. Mason Streater sent a hard-hit ball to right field for his first triple of the season to score Connor Droze from first to give Lander an early 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats would strike again in the third. After a double from Burgess, Dupert would single up the middle to give Lander a 2-0 lead.

The Patriot would respond with a run in the fourth after a grounder to second scored a runner from third.

Francis Marion would plate two more in the fifth as a solo shot to right field and a grounder to second brought home two Patriots to put FMU ahead 3-2.

The Bearcats would respond in the bottom of the inning with three consecutive hits, as Burgess, Dupert and Droze all singled with Burgess coming home to tie the game up at 3-3. Dougherty would crack the game open with his first hit of the season later in the inning. Getting a hold of a pitch, Dougherty would let one fly over the left-field fence to score three and put Lander up 6-3.

Lander would tack another run on in the sixth as Burgess would bring home Gary Garrett on a sac fly to right after Garrett had doubles and stolen a base to put Lander ahead 7-3.

Francis Marion got back on the board in the top of the seventh after a Patriot was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a double down the right field line to put Francis Marion down 7-4.

Neither side would be able to produce any offense for the remainder of the game, as the Bearcats would stop the losing skid at Dolny Stadium.

Michael Nastro got the start against Francis Marion and went three innings where he allowed just three hits and struck out one. Kurt Rogers picked up his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Evan Mauldin earned his first save after striking out all three batter he faced in the nineth inning. Braeden Burton, Garrett Major, Tyler Bowen and Zach Pellegrino all saw releif apperances as well.

The Bearcats hit the road once more for three games at Claflin starting March 18.
