MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Lander baseball team fell in its first game of the series against Georgia College 12-2 on Saturday.
Lander drops to 9-10 overall and 1-3 in the PBC while Georgia College moves to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the PBC.
The Bearcats just needed one hit to score their first run. With one out on the board, Landon Dupert got hold of a pitch and sent it out of the park to give Lander a 1-0 edge.
The Bobcats would counter with a run of their own on a ground out to the pitcher that allowed a run to score in the third.
The fourth would see both sides plate runs. Lander scored its second run of the game when Connor Droze, who doubled in the inning, came around to score on an RBI single from Bradley Davis to put the Bearcats up 2-1. Georgia College scored four runs of its own to overtake the Bearcats in the bottom of the inning. A pair of RBI doubles and a sac fly for the Bobcats helped score the four runs in an inning that saw five hits for the home squad. A sac fly in the fifth would score another run for the Bobcats, giving them a 6-2 advantage.
The eighth inning would see six more runs come across for the Bobcats as another RBI double brought home two runs to push the lead for Georgia College to 8-2. An RBI single for Georgia College with two outs brought the score to 9-2. Georgia College wasn't done scoring in the inning, as an RBI single and RBI double in back-to-back at-bats scored three more runs to give the hosts a 12-2 edge.
Bennett Sloper got the start and went four innings. He allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out two. Zach Pellegrino, Braeden Burton, Michael Nastro, Tyler Bowen and Drew Luckey all made relief appearances.
The Bearcats and Bobcats will face each other in a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game set for 1 pm.
