Baseball travels to battle Georgia College this weekend

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team returns to conference action after a close 7-5 loss to No. 2 Wingate as the Blue and Gold battle Georgia College on the road this weekend.

STORYLINES

  • The Bearcats fought hard against No. 2 Wingate on Wednesday, falling 7-5.
  • Connor Droze helped keep Lander on pace against the Bulldogs. Droze had two hits and four RBI. Both his hits were for doubles.
  • Nick Foray went 4.1 innings of work in the start. He struck out nine while allowing two runs, none earned on just one hit.
  • This will be the 52nd ,53rd and 54th time the Bearcats and Bobcats will have met after this series.
  • Lander trails 31-20 in the all-time series. The Bearcats are 11-13 at home while 6-17 on the road. In conference matches, Lander is 17-30 against the Bobcats.
  • Lander won three straight against Georgia College before dropping the last game between the two teams 14-7 on April 10.
  •  Ian Jenkins currently leads the Bearcats in batting average this season. He's hitting .377 heading into the series against the Bobcats.
  • Vincent DeRubeis is the Bearcat's leader in hits with 23. Jenkins is tied for second with Bradley Davis with 20 hits on the season.
  • Jenkins and Walker McDowell are the leaders in doubles with five each. Matthew Burgess leads the way in triples with two. DeRubeis is also the leader in home runs with six while Mason Streater is second with four and Jenkins is third with three. DeRubeis is also the leader in RBI with 22.
  • Evan Mauldin has a 3-0 record this season through eight appearances and 20 innings of work. Bennett Nance leads the Bearcats with 26 innings of work while Bennett Sloper is second with 23.1. Nance has the only complete game for Lander this season.
  • Sloper is leading Lander in strikeouts with 24 and Kurt Rogers has the team lead in saves with three.
  • Georgia College is currently 9-9 overall and 0-3 in the PBC after recently falling to Young Harris in three straight games.
  • Before battling the Mountain Lions to begin conference action, Georgia College had six of their last seven which featured a 7-5 victory of No. 25 Mount Olive.
  • Austin Holloway is leading the Bobcats in batting average with a .404 on the season. He also leads the team in hits with 23 and is tied for the lead in doubles with five.
  • Two Bobcats have hit triples this season while Palmer Sapp leads the way with three home runs for Georgia College. Bellflower also leads the way in RBI this season with 17. Three Bobcats are tied for second with 11 RBI.
  • Luc Scudellari and DavisSwenson both have won two games for Georgia College. Scudellari also has two saves. Brennan Crooms and Josh Hudgins have both thrown complete games.
  • Hudgins had delt a team-high 26 innings this season while Swenson is second with 21.2 innings of work. Swenson is also the strikeout leader for Georgia College with 31. He's averaging a 12.88 K/9 ratio.
  • Georgia College travels to face USC Aiken for a conference series beginning on Friday 18 while Lander battles Francis Marion on March 15 next.
