AUGUSTA, Ga. - Sixth-ranked Lander held off a late rally by Augusta, defeating the Jaguars 74-65 Wednesday in Peach Belt women's basketball action.
Augusta jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but a jumper by Miriam Recarte and two free throws by Makaila Cangè gave the Bearcats the 4-3 lead. A three-point play by Cangé with 5:55 left in the quarter gave Lander a 7-4 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. The Bearcats would lead by as much as 15 in the third quarter, but the Jaguars chipped away, cutting the deficit to six with just over a minute left in regulation but couldn't overcome the gap as Lander hit their free throws down the stretch.
Cangé led all players with 27 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Amiaya Melvins and Vashae Rideout added 13 points, and Aniaya Jester scored 10. Sarah Crews added a team-high six assists.
