Baseball hosts North Greenville, travels to Queens this week

GREENWOOD – After splitting a two-game series against Erskine on Friday and Saturday, the Lander baseball team will host North Greenville on February 8 and 11 before going to Queens (N.C.) for a pair of games on Feb. 12 and 13.

STORYLINES

  • Lander is coming off a split against Erskine on Friday and Saturday. 
  • The Bearcats won the season-opener 2-1 on Friday while losing 2-0 on Saturday.
  • Ian Jenkins and Vincent DeRubeis hit home runs on Friday to provide the firepower to beat Erskine on Friday. 
  • Bennett Sloper struck out eight batters in his first start as a Bearcat on Friday, while Evan Mauldin earned the win. Garrett Major picked up his first save of the season on Friday.
  • Lander would be limited to three hits on Saturday, with the Flying Fleet winning 2-0.
  • Bryce Jackson struck out seven batters over five innings on Saturday.
  • Lander will play host to North Greenville for a pair of games on Tuesday and Friday before traveling to Charlotte to battle Queens on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Both North Greenville and Queens are 2-1 early on.

  • Jenkins leads Lander with three hits. He also has one double and one home run and one RBI. DeRubeis joins Jenkins in the home run category with one of his own.
  • Sloper leads the Bearcats with eight strikeouts over four innings. In his lone start, Sloper allowed just two hits and no earned runs.
  • After dealing with North Greenville and Queens this week, Lander takes on Newberry for a three-game series. Two games are set to be played at Dolny Stadium (Feb. 18+20) while one game will take place at Newberry (Feb. 19).
